After kicking off 2016 in style, we’re bringing the very best of Welsh Spoken Word with:

Zaru ‘Zhubat’ Jonson!

Our (in)famous open mic kicks off at 7pm with a host of the best Spoken Word, Musicians, Comedians and more!

As always it’s £3 on the door with our picnic buffet at Un Deg Un. 8th February 2016

Zaru Jonson has been performing words regularly since being awarded the second place and audience vote prizes at Literature Wales’ John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry, 2009. Under various names, he has since read at the Edinburgh Free Fringe, Dinefwr Literature Festival, Cheltenham Poetry Festival, and two or three hundred-odd other open mics, exhibition openings, protests, hip-hop nights and miscellaneous events, often clustered around Cardiff. During 2014, he took part in the ‘Dylan Live / Dylan ar Daith’ tour in celebration of Dylan Thomas’ centenary, playing at eight universities around Wales, the Dylan In Fitzrovia Festival in London, and the PEN International Literature Festival in New York City (alongside Mr Phormula, Martin Daws and Professor Daniel Williams.)

Zaru likes dogs, believes in a god, and is incurably sincere. Recently he returned from Canada, where he avoided everything and picked hazelnuts.

Opportunity for Poets with National Theatre Wales and POLARBEAR

National Theatre Wales are excited to announce that there is an amazing opportunity coming up soon!The amazing opportunity is a chance for 8 spoken word artists/poets between the ages of 16-25 to take part in Talking Doorsteps. Talking Doorsteps is a project set up by The Roundhouse Theatre, and thanks to both the Roundhouse and NTW TEAM it will be taking place in Cardiff.It’s a 3 day program where 8 lucky people will be given the chance to take part in some workshops with a Roundhouse Poet. These will be used to create and develop a piece of work. Participants will be filmed in a variety of locations around Cardiff performing their pieces, which will be put online by The Roundhouse on their website & YouTube Channel. Two people from this project will then be chosen to represent Wales in ‘Last Word’ Festival. . . All travel and accommodation will be covered for the duration of project.

So the big question, “How do I become one of the lucky 8?” Well NTW TEAM will be holding two Word4Word Nights, one in Wrexham on the 3rd of March and one in Cardiff on the 26th February. These are open mic nights where 10 people get a 5-minute slot to showcase their work and from these, the lucky 8 will be picked by members of NTW TEAM.To apply to perform at this event or for more info email us at team@nationaltheatrewales.org stating whether you would like to perform at the Cardiff or Wrexham event. Get Creative at Oriel Wrecsam – Writing workshops: Autumn 2014 – Spring 2015

We hurtle towards winter. The evenings draw in. Now is the perfect time to hone our creative skills, to dust off those writings lounging in the top draw, or begin a new creative adventure.

Diving into six divergent writing genres over the course of as many months, participants will examine, and write on, a broad and wide-ranging variety of themes. Writing experience isn’t necessary – just bring an open, inquisitive mind and a sense of adventure. These sessions are perfect for engaging with your creativity, either as a seasoned writer, a curious beginner, or for people working in other artforms interested in trying something new.

Creative workshops will run on the second Saturday of each month at Oriel Wrecsam, from1pm – 3pm. Cost per session: £10/£7 concessions.

For 2014:
October 11th: Slam & structure.
Slam poetry is a universal phenomenon rooted in the American spoken word tradition. We’ll create an opinion piece each and slam it out at the end of the session.

November 15th: Psychogeography and the dérive.
The Situationists of 1950s Paris drifted through the city in a playful fashion, intent on creating revolutionary ways of being and transforming our relationships with urban landscapes…

December 13th: Scaling the Dark Mountain – writing rooted in time & place.
Writing new stories for the age of endings. ‘When the cities lie at the monster’s feet, there are left the mountains.’ dark-mountain.net
