· How to make a group work … and not fall at the first hurdle
· How to assign roles based on what‘s needed
· How to keep communication flowing
· How to find a space and keep it
· How to get yourselves known
· How to know the rules so you can work out how to do things differently
· How to get the confidence you need to make it happen!

There is no charge for these workshops and lunch will be provided.

All participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

The trainers for the workshops are from Dynamix and plan to make the day fun, interactive and accessible to all.

To book a place, click on one of the links below!

30th March – Swansea

1st April – Cwmbran

THIS GIG is a volunteer-led event supported by THIS Project. As volunteers Kieran Brough, Hari McDermott and Luciano Morris help with day to day duties around the Undegun and Galeri 3B, which include helping with music events, setting up exhibitions and invigilating. The relationship has developed over the year and the volunteers are now embracing the opportunity to run their own music event.

The idea behind THIS GIG is to bring people musical entertainment and incorporate everyone in the community to get involved! Our aims are to get bands from all around the country to travel to Wrexham and create a fun and vibrant atmosphere. The bands we have playing are very well known and are great guys. Doppelganger and Neck Deep’s own Ben Barlow are both from the Wrexham area. We also have special guests from Bristol, Highlives.
Doppelganger are an alternative rock band, Ben Barlow is going to be playing an acoustic set for the night, and Highlives are popular for their Pop Punk sound. The night is going to be a mixture of amazing bands, we hope the people who are coming will enjoy themselves and leave with some new favourites in there music.

The event will be taking place on the 27th September 2014, at Undegun in the centre of Wrexham. Doors will be opening from 7:30pm and bands will be starting at 8:00pm. We currently have 50 tickets for advance which are available on our Facebook page to reserve: www.facebook.com/THISGig but you will be able to pay on the door.

One Town, Many Events for World Peace Day in Wrexham

21 September is World Peace Day. The occasion has been marked in Wrexham for a number of years, with humble beginnings, and has grown year on year.

In 2012, individuals and groups across Wrexham came together to celebrate three days for peace, with a schools day hosted by St. Christopher’s School on 20 Sept. and involving ten local primary and senior schools, followed by a multi-faith service, two days of live music, info. stalls, shared food and activities on the Library field (Llwyn Isaf) and evening gigs on 21 and 22 Sept.

This year there is a programme of events for peace over three days organised by various groups.

Hopefully you’ll remember Mise En Scene’s eruptive performance at Focus Wales 2013. The Canadian two-piece have returned to Wrexham and will be joined by the The Fag Machine, Secateurs and Too Many JDs.

Organised by Brendan Griffiths.

Thoughts from some of those involved in organising Peace Day events in Wrexham:

Brendan Griffiths, music promoter and member of the Peace Day Group, who has organised the live music for the World Peace Day events on the Library Field and in the Commercial:

“World Peace Day is important for me as it allows people from all walks of life come together and think about a subject that is universally important: peace.”

Maria Pizzoni, member of the group organising the Service for Peace and the Peace Day Group:

“The events and people wanting to be involved in organising them have grown over the past few years, which probably shows what people feel about peace in our world. We’ve opened up the service this year to include something for people of no faith who want their hopes expressed too. People are tired of war and conflict and this peace day gives us the opportunity to look forward in hope.”

Katie Saxby, member of the Peace Day Group and involved in planning Peace Days:

“I feel it is wonderful that we come together in Wrexham for Peace Day each year, as a gathering together of individuals and groups that do choose peace, a celebration of all who are working towards peace…in our everyday lives and in the rest of the world, with an invitation for everyone to join us.”

Genny Bove, member of Wrexham Peace & Justice Forum and the Peace Day Group, who has been involved in organising the Schools Peace Day and World Peace Day on the Library Field as well as talks and workshops in Wrexham schools during the summer term:

“In a time of endless war driven by a desire for control of scarce resources and the relentless pursuit of profit without regard for human life, wildlife or the planet, hope for a more peaceful future lies with ordinary people engaging with questions of peace and justice both locally and globally. World Peace Day in Wrexham is a local response to the global celebration of peace and global call for an end to war. It’s very encouraging that there are so many events marking the day in Wrexham this year.”

NEW! Professional development training opportunity for visual artists & makers in Wales
Application deadline Tuesday 23rd July 12.00 noon

engage Cymru is seeking applications from emerging, early or mid-career visual artists or makers who have a commitment to gallery education and would like to develop their practice to work with ‘hard to reach’ or vulnerable young people.

Artists as Learners is a new professional development programme for visual artists and makers living and working in Wales, which will pilot in the autumn term 2013. It has been developed as a direct response to recent engage Cymru programmes, such as Reach the Heights www.engage.org/reachtheheights, which highlighted a shortage of visual artists and makers with the skills and experience required to work with hard to reach or vulnerable young people in a gallery setting.

The programme aims to build capacity of artists with the necessary skills, approach and experience to work with ‘hard to reach’ young people, and to engage them in gallery education projects or learning through the visual arts or crafts.

Participants will be mentored by an experienced lead artist and the programme will run in partnership with Oriel Mostyn, Ceredigion Museum & Gallery, Glynn Vivian Museum & Gallery and Denbighshire Arts Service / Rhyl Library & Art Gallery. Each venue will host two ‘artist-learners’ for a total of eight places on the pilot course.

Each course is anticipated to run for 6 days in September, October or November – dates to be confirmed. Previous experience working with young people is not required, but we are looking for artists and makers who have a genuine interest in developing their practice in this direction.

Participants will gain:

skills, experience and confidence to devise & lead projects with young people

the opportunity to be mentored by / learn directly from an artist experienced in working with hard to reach young people

a wider knowledge and understanding of gallery learning programmes

access to a range of engage and Unitas learning resources

the opportunity to build their professional network with colleagues working in the visual arts, museums and local authorities

Get involved at Un Deg Un – Wrexham’s New Pop Up Art Space

A new pop up Arts Centre will be opening in two weeks’ time in the former JJB Sports Shop in Wrexham. Called ‘Un Deg Un’ (‘eleven’ in Welsh, as it’s situated at 11 Regent Street), the space has exhibition and event space, space for artists studios and will be a great town-centre meeting place where you can pop in for a coffee, and make use of the social space.

The centre is there for the use of everyone within Wrexham’s Creative Community, and as well as being a useable space, there’s lots of opportunities to get involved in the action, and help shape the future of the project.
These opportunities include:

Renting a Studio Space

From next week (week commencing 15th July) we’ll have 5 Studio Spaces ready to go. These spaces are rentable from around £15 per week (with 4 weeks deposit), but as we’re working hard towards the opening, if you’d be prepared to lend a hand helping us out, then the first month will be free!

Get Involved with the management and running of the centre

There are limited opportunities to get on board to experience and support the running of a large scale community arts project. This is a perfect chance for those who want to get involved in arts management as a career to get some real hands on experience.

Galleries

There are multiple opportunities to exhibit within the space, which can easily contain small private or group exhibitions right through to large scale shows.

Social Space

If you’re looking to get together with friends, clients or just have a group discussion about your next piece of collaborative art work, then we have a great social space. Refreshments are available on-site for a donation so just come in, relax and make yourself at home!

Meeting, Practice & Rehearsal Space

All types of groups, whether it be a band or a choir, a drama group or a knitting circle need a place to meet, or rehearse. Maybe Un Deg Un could be that place for you?

Invigilate

If you have a few hours a month to spare and would like to get involved join our team of Invigilators. Great for those who enjoy interacting with the public, and helping out with the day to day running of the centre, which is so important to allow everything else to work smoothly.

Events

We’re looking to establish a programme of events running from September so if you have an arts or music related event in mind that would suit an unusual venue, then this could be your chance. We’re happy to work within anyone who has a good idea, so tell us what you’re thinking and we could help support the set-up of your event.
<RB>So does any of that sound like it’s for you? We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to work with, who can gain experience in various roles, from invigilation to management experience; people who want to hold events; or just people that are keen to get involved with a new and unique initiative.

Anyone interested, please let us know: contact@thisproject.co.uk

POP UP ARTS CENTRE TO BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO THE HIGH STREET

Artists, Musicians and Performers from across the UK are set to revitalise Wrexham Town Centre, through the opening of an innovative new arts centre in the heart of the town.

‘Un-Deg-Un’ will breathe new life into the site of the former JJB Sports Store in the centre of Wrexham. Transformed into an arts centre, and open to all, it will play host to exhibitions, performances, projects and workshops by artists and musicians from all over the UK as well as providing studio space for local artists. The non-for-profit venture is a collaboration between the local creative organisation THIS Project, and East Street Arts, a contemporary arts organisation based in Leeds with a national reputation for transforming empty retail spaces.
Wrexham has a rich vein of cultural activity and this pop-up project is about making this activity visible to the public to change their perception of the town, raise awareness of the arts and local arts events, and to engage a wider section of the community in arts activities.

Dave Gray, owner of The Foundry, Wrexham’s creative industries hub, and the joint project manager for ‘Un Deg Un’ feels this is a real opportunity to bring the town centre back to life. Speaking about the project, he said “the aim is to establish a community hub in the heart of Wrexham featuring the best of local music, art, culture and creativity. The advantages to pop up spaces have been seen throughout the UK. The temporary, yet impactful nature of these projects carry benefits to landlords as an alternative to leaving properties empty; instead of having unused voids in the middle of town centres these properties can be temporarily repurposed for communities and can make a positive economic impact on the towns where they exist; and they are invaluable to the creative communities they serve.”

THIS Project, which works with Wrexham County Borough Council and is supported by the Arts Council Of Wales, are also working on an ongoing community garden project in the town centre and have worked with Oriel Wrecsam to deliver the innovative ‘Reimagine Wrexham’ exhibition last year, but this represents a new vision for the team as they hope to collaborate with a diverse mix of groups, organisations and businesses in the town.

Over the past year, since launching in January 2012, they have built up some important relationships and partnerships in the area. One of the most important of these has been with the staff and students of the North Wales School of Art & Design, who will be working with the team over the coming weeks to install the first exhibition which will showcase the best of this year’s degree show and celebrate the town’s creative young talent.

The team behind the redevelopment of the store would like to hear from members of the public who might like to donate furniture or arts equipment to the project; from people who might like to get involved as volunteers to help run the centre; or from individual artists and creative groups who might like to use the space. Speaking about the importance of volunteers to the project, Dave said, “we acknowledge that the success of the project will be in using the space to benefit the wider creative community of the town and we’re hoping to get as many people and interested groups involved as possible.”

The centre is currently being revitalised and set to open to the public on Saturday 27th July. There will be a private launch held on Thursday, 25th July, and anyone who would like to attend should contact the team through their website.

..Anyway, Creative International is fast approaching and we’re pretty excited.
For a month Wrexham will play host to artists, musicians and creatives from far and wide as well as showcasing some great local talent. There’s going to be alot to enjoy but there will also be a lot to involve yourself with.

We recently mentioned some volunteer opportunities (As did Focus Wales and CI) so you can lend your time to a good cause and share your skills with some good folk but you can also share your art with the public.

We are going to be opening a pop-up shop to coincide with Creative International and we’re looking to add to the wealth of talent by encouraging you to share your work with us. On a basic level there is an opportunity to be included in our exhibition, we’d love that, but the scope is much larger. If you have any ideas for ways you could use the space, we’d like to hear them too. Don’t be a stranger, drop us a line – mikej@thisproject.co.uk
