ROPE is pleased to announce Lo-Fi psychobilly DIRTY BEACHES will headline The Compass, Chester on Friday 10th May
Lo-fi’s favourite nomad, Dirty Beaches, is on the road again—and this time, he’s coming to the UK. Alex Hungtai, the 32 year-old Taiwanese-Canadian behind Dirty Beaches, took the blogosphere by storm with his first full-length release Badlands in 2011. Dirty Beaches gets to the heart—or rather, the dark, grimy underbelly—of themes like longing and loneliness. Hungtai’s voice sounds like he’s channeling the ghost of a 1950’s rockabilly. Dirty Beaches’ decaying, reverb-haunted beauty evokes the celluloid hallucinations of films by the likes of David Lynch.
A trans-pacific nomad and genre hopping sound smith, his past releases include: drone instrumentals, films scores, and his fascination with dissecting popular American music like blues, rockabilly, soul and RNB, often rendering them to the point where it’s no longer recognizable. This year, Dirty Beaches will release a sizable follow up to 2011’s great LP Badlands. Drifters/Love Is The Devil is a 16 track double LP spanning 75 minutes that’s out on May 21st in the U.S. (May 20th in Europe) via Zoo Music.
