This exciting workshop will introduce participants to the basics of letterpress (relief) printing using traditional techniques and materials dating back over 500 years – an art form which is re-emerging and is being recognised as a valuable asset in the creative printmaker’s repertoire of skills.

Participants will be shown how to use relief printing to produce unique and highly individualistic prints from traditional metal type and relief blocks using antique printing presses, and printing on a variety of different substrates (papers).

Participants will learn how to set metal relief type by hand (both display and composition sizes), make up the type into pages incorporating blocks (linocuts, photopolymer and metal plates), and pull proofs for checking.

The letterpress printing process will then be introduced, and participants will use a variety of printing presses to print their own typeset work, using substrates of different kinds.

An emphasis will be placed on the relationship between image, impression, ink and paper at all stages of the printmaking process, with the essential principles of typographic design and layout underpinning the experience in a very practical way.
