Invitation to Quote Dan Ganfas / Under Canvas

The artists’ residencies will be inspired by the theme of connecting communities and the community heritage of the Vale of Clwyd, and culminate in the creation of a multi-art-form installation and performance piece. The artists may also want to link the work to the National Eisteddfod’s visit to Denbigh in August 2013.

Denbighshire County Council and Flintshire County Council are seeking three artists, each working in a different art form – glass, textiles or literature – to engage with the public and young people within schools and health settings in rural Denbighshire and Flintshire.

Artists’ Brief

The artists’ residencies will be inspired by the theme of connecting communities and the community heritage of the Vale of Clwyd, and culminate in the creation of a multi-art-form installation and performance piece. The artists may also want to link the work to the National Eisteddfod’s visit to Denbigh in August 2013.

Between January and May 2013, the 3 artists will spend the majority of their residencies within the community creating the work. The artists will spend time at Denbigh, Ruthin and Mold Hospitals as well as primary schools in the Vale of Clwyd and rural Flintshire.

The poet/writer will also act as a modern troubadour (in the vein of ‘Twm o’r Nant’) and travel between Mold and Ruthin on the public bus, writing poetry with the commuters and hopping on and off at pubs, village halls, county parks, the Clwydian Range and local businesses along the route. These poems/creative writings will then inspire the visual and glass artists and form the basis of the completed artwork.

In June the work will be installed in the Gallery at Denbigh Library and will stay in situ until after the Eisteddfod in August 2013.  Following the Eisteddfod, this exhibition/installation will also tour to Clwyd Theatr Cymru in October/November 2013.  At the end of this exhibition the work will be dismantled and prepared for permanent hanging at some of the health settings and schools as a lasting legacy of the project. A CD and/or publication of the written work may also be produced.

Workshop Period

  • Each artist will be engaged for the period as outlined below leading up to and also during the National Eisteddfod in Denbigh in August 2013.
