On graduating with a BA in Illustration from Glyndwr University, Wales, Stedhead returned home to the Isle of Man to develop her artistic practice. In September 2014, following a series of collaborations, Stedhead moved to London to further develop her career. Exhibiting at the ICA with DJ and artist Goldie and alongside Jamie Reid and Mau Mau at Eddie Locks The Lock Up exhibition, Stedhead soon found herself engaging with an East End all-female art collective; together with Suzko, Candy Lo and Motor she has scaled and painted large artworks for various events both in and out London. From group shows at Juno in Shoreditch to Notting Hill’s Portobello Film Festival, the D&AD awards at the Truman Brewery, a skatepark in Luxembourg, Street Fest and UpFest in Bristol, and exhibiting with an all Manx (IoM) collective called Dark Seas Wild Mountain on the Isle of Man, Stedhead has been live and kicking with these collectives.

Her latest show ‘Beauty Marks’, held at Montys on Brick lane at the end of 2015 was her first independent London exhibit. Her latest experiments conjured up bodies from calligraphy like swipes of a fat, chisel tipped permanent marker. All artworks were drawn under her own steam—which is to say, drawn from her own liveliness, celebrating the movement of bodies through bold strokes of marker. Inspired by motion, music and the beauty in our contours. Her unique style dictating the jutting of limbs, jaws and hips as silhouettes, marks and lines, achieve character born of the artists intuition. These spirits enhanced by brilliant flashes of azure, and gold threading through the scene, demonstrating the energy of the human form.

For Focus Wales, Stedhead will be including her Beauty Marks Exhibition, as well as some brand new pieces.

Over the run up to Christmas, THIS Project have approached 12 artists this festive season to ask 12 questions about them, their practice and what will they be up to this holiday. For our first artist we approached Undegun studio holder Liam Stokes-Massey to ask him about life, art and the prospects of 2016!

Name: Liam Stokes-Massey

Current Location?
Undegun, Wrexham

Favourite Reindeer?:
Comet. Because that is one badass name.

Describe your self in 5 words:
Relaxed, Critical, Focused, Unfocused, Inconsistent

Favourite place, and why?:
I have many favourite places. I’ve just about settled into my studio and nearly got it feeling as comfortable as possible, so that’s certainly one. I go to local coffee shops to paint regularly as I really enjoy the vibrant atmospheres and talking to people.

But my favourite place of all places in the world has to be Iceland. I went on holiday earlier this year and fell in love. The mountains, the waterfalls, the people, the green expanses were the most beautiful things I’d ever seen. I hope to go back next year.

What is your current practice and what have you been up to?:
Currently I’m a pencil portrait artist primarily but have recently been exploring watercolour painting. I am colourblind so this has proved, er, ‘interesting’ at times but am slowly getting to grips with it and enjoying myself very much. I like to make little ‘pop culture’ and personal paintings which have proved very popular indeed with my customers.

How long have you been a practising Artist for?:
After a long hiatus (since school), I’ve been drawing properly for around 2-3 years.

At what point in your life did you know you wanted to be a Artist?:
My last job was working in a bank. I think some people who know me well might have raised an eyebrow when I got the job because it certainly isn’t ‘me’. After just over a year I decided to stop ignoring my gut and leave to become Self-Employed as an Artist. Mental.

Is there anything in particular you are looking forward to this Christmas?
I’m spending it with my girlfriend and her family, so that’ll be really lovely. Spending time with my family too, of course! Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a Massey clan kneesup!

Have you got any plans for the New Year?:
In the New Year I hope to take part in a couple of exhibitions – something I’ve never done before which is quite exciting! So I’ll be putting a lot of thought into original pieces to contribute. I hope to practice painting a lot more too! The beauty of being in this line of work is that the possibilities are truly endless. And that is really, really exciting.

If you could buy your 10 year old self anything for Christmas what would it be?
My 10 year old self had everything he could have ever wanted, so nothing! (Thanks Mum x)

If you could get anything for Christmas this year what would it be?:
My girlfriend has really knocked it out of the park with my presents this year. One in particular is probably the answer to this question, so she’s nailed it.

Mental Health is a subject that touches the lives of everyone in our community, regardless of wealth, gender, race or religion. Its impact can be far-reaching, and artists and Mental Health organisations from across the region have come together to explore the subject in a three week exhibition taking place in Wrexham town centre’s art space.
For the second consecutive year, Undegun are proud to be hosting a World Mental Health Awareness Day event in conjunction with an ongoing exhibition. The aim of the event is to encourage the wider community to engage with the various groups around the North of Wales who support people who live with mental health conditions. As part of the day the unveiling of ‘Flourish/Ffynnu’, an exhibition created by numerus associations from the area will be launched on Saturday 10th October from 2pm.

Denise Charles from Hafal commented about their involvement in the exhibition and what it has meant to the people that she works with.
“Hafal are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Undegun and other service providers in Wrexham, to once again celebrate World Mental Health day. Service users, carers, staff and the public will all have the opportunity to exhibit their work together, thus reinforcing that there are no boundaries in art, everyone is equal. This is Hafal’s ethos and we are pleased that this will be highlighted as part of the World Mental Health Day celebrations.”

The title for this year’s exhibition Flourish/Ffynnu which means to grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, aims to give people from these communities a chance to openly express themselves by helping them exhibit the work created through the support of associations such as the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), Hafal, KIM Inspire Advanced Brighter Futures and Mental Health Care (MHC).

The exhibition has been open to all abilities to help encourage creativity and confidence within the groups. Dave Gray from THIS Project says
‘It is important for the people of Wrexham to be able to use a space such as Undegun and see that it is not just available for high profile and international artists but for a wider range of people within the community.’
If you would like to take part in World Mental Health Day at Undegun then please feel free to come down to the launch on the 10th October from 2-4pm. The exhibition will take place until 30th October and open to the public Wednesday – Saturday 12-4pm.

Sivulla is the current incarnation of the Finnish / Welsh cultural exchange that has been running since 2012, arranged by Marja Bonada (Wrexham) and Maija Helasvuo (Hyvinkaa, Finland). This exhibition was curated by Helasvuo, and features selected artists from South Karelian Artists Society (E.K.T.S.)

Sivulla is a Finnish word, meaning “On The Edge”. It refers to the geographical location of Karelia, being on the edge of Finland, next to their “Great Neighbour”; Russia. But it also refers to a state of mind, where the person is next to something or someone, but excluded from them. The work in the exhibition is from 7 artists from the region; Paivi Eronen, Maiju Heikkila, Teemu Heikkinen, Tuulia Iso-Tryykari, Jussi Nykanen, Paula Tella and Anne Tompuri. There are seven different responses to the theme, and their subject matter varies from alienation and self sabotage to humorous images of the Finnish close-to-nature bathing culture.

Photo’s below show the opening t on the 1st May. The exhibition will be at Undegun until 6th June. Open to the public Thursday to Saturday 12-4pm.
