Legendary DJ Don Letts comes to Wrexham
BBC Radio 6 DJ, DON LETTS who sensationalised the fusion of punk and reggae will be performing at the Centenary Club at Glyndwr University Racecourse, Wrexham on THURSDAY 8TH MAY to launch the KAYA WEEKENDER.
The Kaya Weekender festival launch is travelling the UK to promote the festival which takes place at the Faenol, Bangor on 8th August and the legendary Don Letts who introduced reggae to punk, managed the Slits, played music with former Clash member Mick Jones in Big Audio Dynamite and has directed videos for everyone from Jimmy Cliff to S’Express will visit Wrexham to present a dj set – playing in the spirit of his time as DJ at London’s legendary Roxy club back in ’77.
Don Letts said “This will be the first time I have performed in Wrexham and I am hoping that people will turn out to support the launch of the Kaya Weekender”
Don Letts’ reputation has been firmly established in both the film and music world, by a substantial body of work, from the late 70’s through the 80’s, 90’s and well into the millennium. His work has been exhibited in The Kitchen N.Y.C, The Institute of Contemporary Art, The N.F.T in London and he was honoured at Brooklyn’s BAM festival. In March 2003 he won a Grammy for his documentary ‘Westway To The World’.
In the mid 80’s he formed the group ‘Big Audio Dynamite’ with Mick Jones (ex-Clash). He went on to perform and co-write four albums with B.A.D achieving several hits on both sides of the Atlantic including the top ten hit E=Mc2. The band recently reformed for a world tour to sell out shows and critical acclaim.
The Kaya Weekender launch party is presented by Exodus productions and Wrexham based creative social enterprise Heb Ffiniau. Early bird tickets are available for £4.00 from the Centenary Club, by reservation on 01978 290680 (£8.00 on the door)
