This is not an ordinary exhibition, in that the works have not been created with an exhibition in mind, indeed some works have not been developed for an audience; rather the works have been produced to test an idea through materials, which may then go further.

The title of the exhibition End of Part 1 is drawn from the taught master’s degrees at Glyndwr University’s North Wales School of Art and Design. The degrees are divided into Part 1 and Part 2. These works have been developed in Part 1. For the students this is a pivotal moment, at which they make the transition to supervised researchers. By consolidating their experiences, knowledge and skills gathered through Part 1 of the Programme, the students develop the concepts, narratives and working practices that become their signature in Part 2. Each student is expected to innovate solutions to the problems emergent in their process of development.

The students have achieved a state of mind which is both Open and Focused. This may initially sound a paradox, but the students have found their focus upon a subject but remain open to the influences upon it and to the empirical knowledge gathered by working with it. They are learning by using their intellect, demanding their intelligence and by creating. They are thinking and doing.

In Part 2 the exhibition will present new works developed from this current exhibition. Each student will be required to exchange the form of their work for the written word and both the students writing and practical work will be examined holistically.

We hope you enjoy this glimpse into the ongoing work of the Master’s students and that you will revisit the exhibition in September to see Part 2.

Our thanks to the exhibiting students, Yadzia Williams, Dave Jones, Stewart Edwards, Dave Gill and Cora Thorne in bringing this exhibition together.
