WAKE is the final exhibition of the year at Undegun and presents new work from four environmental artists; Marja Bonada, James Brady, Di McGhee and Tim Pugh. This exhibition explores the changing face of our planet through a number of different styles and approaches. These four artists have previously made work around the topic of the environment, but this will be the first time that all four artists will have come together for an exhibition. It promises to be a visual feast, stimulating as well as thought provoking.
Wrexham based artist and Undegun studio holder Marja Bonada, has been no stranger in the past 12 months to politically based artwork, from curating “Kinesis” at Galeri 3B (an exhibition that looked into issues some people are currently facing in Taiwan and Wales) to exhibiting her own work in the Russian constructivism based exhibition “Today Is the Deed”. In this exhibition Marja is showing some large action paintings.
Associated with CIWEM Arts & Environment Network and a member of the International Eco-Art Network, James Brady has also curated several ecologically mindful exhibitions. By taking in the poetic nature and deep aesthetics of the landscape, James incorporates his findings in digital videos and field recordings. In this exhibition he presents some of this audio work, as well as work including organic matter and live trees.
Di McGhee has been previously known for exploring the relationships with performance and identity but has also recently re-engaged with drawing and recording objects found whilst walking, making, performing, investigating and exploring, then analysing these objects and the relationships we have with the social, physical and creative environment. The work she has done for this exhibition is based around her home in the Lake District, and her feelings regarding the threat of the proposed nuclear power station there.
Winner of the 2014 professional art prize at Oriel Wrecsam and recent winner of Bangor’s Selector’s Prize, Tim Pugh has been making an impact on the North Wales art scene. Tim uses a mixture of sculpture and drawings to make artwork based around nature and construction. He often uses organic matter in his work, and it often addresses the problems we encounter when our convenience based capitalist culture meets the ecological reality.
Amid recent growing fears on topics including nuclear power and fracking with concerns about our health after the World Health Organisation suggest processed meat is harmful to our health this exhibition aims to broaden awarenesss and asks the viewer to consider issues of industry versus nature, protection and preservation and the asks for debate on the impact of a nuclear legacy on future generations
The artwork for this exhibition is currently in the process of being made and will be unveiled at the public opening from 6pm on November 21st. The launch event will also feature a live performance from Many Faced Soul, a band from the borderlands between England and North Wales consisting of Stephanie Finegan vocals and xylophone and Guy Turner ipad and bass guitar. The exhibition will run until December 11th.
