Crackling Vinyl presents… Y Niwl

Free before 9pm. £4 after

Y Niwl is an instrumental rock band formed in North Wales in 2009. Originally a surf rock band, their style has progressed to incorporate a wider range of influences, though still retaining the instrumental aspect. Its founding members, Alun Evans (guitar), Siôn Glyn (bass) and Pete Richardson (drums) were joined by Gruff ab Arwel (organ/guitar) soon after forming, and the band released its debut single ‘Un, Dau, Tri’ in early 2010 on the Aderyn Papur label. Recorded with veteran studio engineer and producer David Wrench near their home town, a self-titled debut album was released later that year, and met with positive reviews in the UK media.

2011 saw the band accompany fellow Welsh artist Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals on a tour of the UK, Europe, USA, and Japan. As well as opening for Gruff with an instrumental set as Y Niwl, the band doubled as his backing band for the tour, as well as numerous festival appearances. This year also saw Y Niwl nominated for the inaugural Welsh Music Prize; the track ‘Undegpedwar’ from the debut album was picked up as the theme tune for the BBC One soccer show ‘Football Focus’; they also released the 7? single ‘Undegchwech/Undegsaith’.

A new drummer, Llyr Pari, was recruited in 2012, being a longtime collaborator with members of the band on various projects. They continued to tour throughout the year, supporting rock ‘n’ roll band The Jim Jones Revue on an UK tour in April, performing all over the UK as well as the Netherlands and Switzerland, and numerous nationwide radio sessions for stations such as BBC6music. Their latest release, a 6-track EP called ’4?, features the new line-up for the first time, and continues the theme of track names – all songs are named after Welsh language numbers
