25 artists have been invited by ‘with love from the artist’ and ‘jazz cakes’ to give work to the people of Wrexham. The work is then documented by the recipient.
James Harper and Jo Marsh are based in Wrexham. They maintain independent practices as artists and curators and are currently working together as artistic consultants for the new pop-up art space, UnDegUn, in Wrexham town centre.
Through working together on various projects over the past year, James and Jo identified commonalities inherent within their respective practices; with regard to participation, inclusivity, and non-hierarchical modes of collaboration with a variety of contributors. With this in mind the concept of this collaboration was born, as a timely progression in the careers of both artists.
I Know You; You Can Come With Me (IKnowYou) is a hybrid of James and Jo’s respective Jazz Cakes and With Love From The Artist (WLFTA) projects, which are detailed in the attached document ‘Background’. It will combine elements from JazzCakes and WLFTA to create a new project, bringing together 50 artists, to take part in participatory project across Wrexham County, culminating in an exhibition at Oriel Wrecsam.
Each participating artist will produce an artefact to be posited as an anonymous gift in the public realm. To identify potential sites for these, artists will come together for a day long ‘Artists Field Trip’, travelling across Wrexham. This will also be a networking opportunity and will be fully documented.
Later, following the field trip, James and Jo will deposit the artefacts across the borough, documenting each one with a photograph as it is left. A bilingual note will be attached to each artefact, asking its finder to email a photograph of the item in its new surroundings, and later to bring the item to Oriel Wrecsam to be exhibited, on a loan basis, as part of IKnowYou. The exhibition will consist of photographs of the deposited artefacts, plus all material received from finders, and documentation of the field trip.
