A two day workshop in traditional etching/intaglio processes, using hard ground, soft ground, sugar lift aquatint, spit biting and how to print the plates, with an emphasis on good safe studio practices.

Jason-Hicklin-1

Jason Hicklin:

The initial period of work takes place within the landscape, walking, taking notes and drawing in sketchbooks and on soft ground zinc plates. On return to the studio this work becomes the source for drawings, paintings and etchings; a period of contemplation, analysis and re-engagement with the sketch books and the landscape itself, a reminder, a trigger for the memory of place and experience.

Etching is fundamental to my work; it creates an atmosphere and period of concentration. The act of decision making and commitment to the mark is paramount. The physicality of corrosion, an element of chance which I experienced in the landscape, can be re-engaged with during the etchings process. This process, together with the rhythm of a series of prints, again, re-engages me with the walks I have made. The boundaries and limits can encourage improvisation and questioning of the etching process. This is what drives my work in the etching studio.

Mae cyfnod cyntaf y gwaith yn digwydd yn y tirlun, yn cerdded, cymryd nodiadau a darlunio mewn llyfrau braslunio ac ar blatiau sinc grwnd meddal. Wedi dychwelyd i’r stiwdio, daw’r gwaith hwn yn ffynhonnell i ddarluniau, paentiadau ac ysgythriadau; cyfnod o fyfyrdod, dadansoddi ac ailgysylltu â’r llyfrau braslunio a’r tirlun ei hun, i ysgogi ac atgoffa’r cof am y lle a’r profiad.

Mae ysgythru yn greiddiol i’m gwaith; mae’n creu awyrgylch a chyfnod o ganolbwyntio. Mae’r weithred o benderfynu ac ymrwymo i’r marc yn hollbwysig. Yn y broses o ysgythru, gellir ailgysylltu â materoldeb cyrydiad, yr elfen o siawns a deimlais yn y tirlun. Mae’r broses hon, yn ogystal â rhythm cyfres o brintiau, eto yn mynd â mi yn ôl at y teithiau cerdded y bûm i arnyn nhw. Gall ffiniau a chyfyngiadau annog gwaith byrfyfyr a chwestiynu’r broses ysgythru. Dyma beth sy’n gyrru fy ngwaith yn y stiwdio ysgythru.
