The first day of this workshop will be spent making one or more collagraph plates, i.e. design, selecting and arranging materials, gluing down and sealing. The finished plates will be inked up and printed on the following day with any additional time used to experiment with more than one method of viscosity printing.

Mary Campbell, brought up in Coventry, was excited by the post-war rebuilding of the city and came to Liverpool in 1962 to study architecture and subsequently town planning. After a career break to raise our family, Mary obtained a PGCE at Edgehill College of Further Education and taught junior children for twelve years. A course she attended on delivering the National Art Curriculum was the inspiration for me to study art, first an Art Foundation Course at Southport College and then the art component of a Joint Honours BA course at Edgehill. There Mary was fortunate to be taught by Tom Titherington and Peter Oakley, who introduced me to collagraphy and viscosity printmaking.

Since then she have worked from home, mainly as a printmaker. Taking ideas from her family and from the people and places she encountered while travelling. Sketchbooks filled over years are the main source of her imagery and collagraphs and viscosity printing are her favourite means of expression. Some of the work is far flung since the time when Mary lived in Sarajevo while her husband worked there after the Bosnian War, but she exhibits mainly at galleries in the north of England, regularly with the Manchester Academy of Fine Art of which I became a member in 2004.
