Oriel Wrecsam have commissioned illustrator Jonny Hannah to produce an unique artwork that will wrap the entire exterior of Siop//Shop and the adjacent workshop space.
The new work, in Jonny’s distinctive style, will illustrate Wrexham’s cultural, industrial and agricultural heritage whilst creating an attractive and instantly recognisable exterior for Oriel Wrecsam’s semi-permanent home on Chester Street.
Jonny Hannah will be continuing his relationship with Oriel Wrecsam having previously exhibited as part of ‘A Child’s Christmas In Wales’ in 2014.
Jonny Hannah grew up in Dunfermline & studied at the Cowdenbeath College of Knowledge, Liverpool Art School & then the Royal College of Art. For the last seventeen years he has been a freelance illustrator, & is represented by the Heart Agency in London & New York. His many clients include The Sunday Telegraph, The New York Times & The St. Kilda Courier.
He happily lives in Southampton, with Sharon & their two bairns, & teaches on the BA Illustration course at Southampton Solent School of Art & Design. His studio has now returned to his back garden, in the loveliest of sheds, now HQ to the ‘Cakes & Ale Press’, a cottage industry publishing books, prints, posters, teatowels & badges.
Merrell books published a rather lovely book all about Jonny & his junk, last year. It’s called ‘Greeting from Darktown” & every home should have one.

The unveiling of this commission marks the start of a new way of working for Oriel Wrecsam as we enter a period of peripatetic exhibition and project making which will see Wrexham town centre become Oriel Wrecsam’s temporary gallery. This period will last for between two and three years in the lead up to the opening of a new and exciting cultural hub in Wrexham.
Mae Oriel Wrecsam wedi comisiynu’r darlunydd Jonny Hannah i gynhyrchu gwaith celf unigryw a fydd yn gorchuddio’r Siop allanol cyfan a’r gofod gweithdy cyfagos.
Bydd y gwaith newydd, yn arddull nodedig Jonny, yn dangos treftadaeth ddiwylliannol, ddiwydiannol ac amaethyddol Wrecsam ac yn creu ochr allanol deniadol hawdd i’w adnabod ar unwaith ar gyfer cartref lled-barhaol Oriel Wrecsam ar Stryt Caer.
Bydd Jonny Hannah yn parhau ei berthynas ag Oriel Wrecsam ar ôl arddangos o’r blaen fel rhan o ‘Nadolig Plentyn yng Nghymru’ yn 2014.
Magwyd Jonny Hannah yn Dunfermline ac astudiodd yng Ngholeg Gwybodaeth Cowdenbeath, Ysgol Gelf Lerpwl ac yna yn y Coleg Celf Brenhinol. Am y ddwy flynedd ar bymtheg diwethaf, mae wedi bod yn ddarlunydd llawrydd, ac yn cael ei gynrychioli gan Asiantaeth Heart yn Llundain ac Efrog Newydd. Mae ei gleientiaid niferus yn cynnwys The Sunday Telegraph, The New York Times a The St Kilda Courier.
Mae’n byw’n hapus yn Southampton, gyda Sharon a’u dau blentyn, ac yn dysgu ar y cwrs BA Darlunio yn Ysgol Gelf a Dylunio Southampton Solent. Mae ei stiwdio wedi dychwelyd bellach i’w ardd gefn, yn y sied fwyaf bendigedig, sydd bellach yn Bencadlys ar y ‘Cakes & Ale Press’, sef diwydiant cartref sy’n cyhoeddi llyfrau, printiau, posteri, tyweli te a bathodynnau.
Cyhoeddodd Merrell Books lyfr eithaf hyfryd yn dweud y cyfan am Jonny a’i geriach, y llynedd. Ei enw yw ‘Greeting from Darktown” a dylai un fod ym mhob cartref.

Mae dadorchuddio’r comisiwn hwn yn nodi dechrau ffordd newydd o weithio ar gyfer Oriel Wrecsam wrth i ni gychwyn ar gyfnod o arddangosfa deithiol a gwaith prosiect a fydd yn gweld canol tref Wrecsam fel oriel dros dro ar gyfer Oriel Wrecsam. Bydd y cyfnod hwn yn para rhwng dwy a thair blynedd gan arwain at agor canolfan ddiwylliannol newydd a chyffrous yn Wrecsam.
