An exciting new art project is aiming to revitalise empty units in Wrexham’s People’s Market, by inviting local artists to exhibit work inspired by their relationship with the town.
‘A Sense of Place’ has been organised by Cyfuno, a collective of volunteers led by Wrexham based artist Angela Davies. It will feature work from both local professional artists and art students, and entries ranging from paintings to sculpture to live performances have been encouraged – provided each gives a unique insight into the artist’s feelings towards Wrexham.
By being held in the People’s Market, it is hoped this Wrexham inspired exhibition will be accessible to the whole community, bring new customers to its neighbours, and support the regeneration of the town.
Michael Mullen, former chairman of the National Market Traders Federation and manager of TJ Carpets, located within the People’s Market, said of the event, “I think it’s a splendid idea, and great way of bringing new customers into the market.”
Building on the success of previous projects that have made use of unoccupied market stalls, as Angela explained, ‘A Sense of Place’ should act as a catalyst to use art as a means to rejuvenate the town into the future.
“The most important aspect of this project is to forge a creative community within the town and to have a platform to present local talent in the public arena, with events like ‘A Sense of Place’, we can begin to establish a creative culture so that future events and projects may follow.”
A Sense of Place opens on Saturday November 3rd, and will be launched with a feast of entertainment including a very special performance by Wrexham Community Choir, and an acoustic set from WE/ARE/ANIMAL, who will be appearing at ‘SPECTRUM Presents’ in the Severn Stars later that evening. Live poetry readings from Peter Read can also be heard at the exhibition on Saturday 8th November.
‘A Sense of Place’ is only possible thanks to the help and support of all the volunteers behind Cyfuno, and the help and support of Glyndwr University, Wrexham CBC and visual arts consultancy ADDO.
It will be open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10.00am until 5.00pm until 30th November, and admission is free.
