If you haven’t heard already about Oriel Wrescam’s latest platform for experimental contemporary art then look no further, as we walked down the road (literally) to talk to OW’s James Harper to talk about what has been going on at PERICLO (meaning risk in Latin).

So to back track a little, the project has been ongoing since 11th September 2015 with its first instalment ‘GIRLS’: Rebecca Gould & Lindsey Mendick at 10 South Arcade, Chester Street this being the first out of the four exhibitions that program coordinator and curator James Harper has set up.

This exhibition came at a controversial time for Oriel Wrecsam and PERICLO as plans for the creative Hub where under fire from all quarters, but in the spirit of cooperation with market traders cosmetics retailer Beauty Box were invited to lend a hand, and were only too pleased to be able to get involved. The staff at Beauty Box worked with the artists to select a palette of colours that were connected to the exhibition, and then set up a stall to provide nail art for the day. This partnership proved to be a great success, and allowed businesses in the market, and the public to engage with the exhibition in a new and interesting way.

From this more open dialog between the gallery and the traders that later on took part in a private viewing for the second instalment featuring Alfie Strong: ‘Heart Shaped Like A Baseball Bat’ on the 6th November 2015 and found it was successful with the discussions about the art work.

With Heart Shaped Like A Baseball Bat, Alfie’s installation looks at the distortion of memories by crossing the line within his mind, that he likes to reference as a television set. The exhibition is a living portrait of memories once experienced and moments not yet to obtained. This is achieved with walls painted in the colour of heather, and a tapestry of the Scottish Highlands on the stairs representing the spot where Alfie’s father wishes his ashes to be scattered This is a place where Alfie has never been but only seen represented in images. The installation is full of these Easter eggs that reference his everyday memories with a childlike element of masks and make believe attached to them.

In the next couple of days the third instalment of the PERICLO line up will be with us. On the 8th January 2016 from 6pm which will be the launch of ‘Super Market Sweep’ (Bonus Round) curated by Owain McGilvary and Yan White, running until the 20th February. The looks will capture the 90’s nostalgia of the TV program and references the ‘theatrical’ elements that surround supermarkets.

Followed shortly by ‘Harnis Your Hareth’ which translates to longing for home that you can no longer return to, this will be curated by James Harper and will look at the art of documenting and using Wrexham as the first inspiration towards this exhibition.

Whilst talking to James, as well as us discussing the program at length and how he has found integrating PERICLO and working with the market traders, I also asked what was the different between coordinating a program compared to curating an exhibition. James suggested that with coordinating the program for PERICLO he was simply bring together groups of artists that he believed would push the boundaries of contemporary art within the already bustling scene in Wrexham. This is the aim of PERICLO’s program at Oriel Wrecsam.

James then talked about how for him curating is like being a good referee*, and how if you try to take over and interfering too much you just end up frustrating those around you and not bring out the best performance in those individuals, but if you step back, directing only when needed, then everyone can enjoy the game. Know if you just replace the referee for James and the football players for artists this makes complete sense in trying to make that harmonious balance that a curator has to consider when bring together an exhibition.

With PERICLO as whole the instalments in the program have been interesting addition to the Wrexham art scene, and how it is supporting its community in a unique way by involving the market traders and breaking down barriers that exist, and look at how they and others perceive certain aspects of art.

*If you have ever meet James it is no surprise that he likes using football references to describe his curatorial role as he is a massive Everton fan (just shows even curators don’t get it right all the time).

If you would like to watch Alfie and James in conversation please feel free to on this link or please feel free to follow PERICLO on Twitter or Facebook

Over the past couple of months the creative juices over at Oriel Wrecsam have been flowing but not from its usual suspects, their artists and curators have still been hard at work but this particular project has come from the members at Advance Brighter Future and emerging artist and coordinator Rhi Moxon.

Designer Maker has been a project to help build the confidence of those who deal with mental health challengers and for them to collaborate with an artist to make a series of products to be sold in Oriel Wrecsam’s shop based on Chester St. The proposal was formed by Oriel’s educational officer Jo Marsh whose role it is to encourage accessibility within the arts and general public with projects such as ‘Art Vend’ and ‘Oriel Crafters’ from Caia Park, the Designer Makers project was going to be another immersive project that any artists would want to be apart of.

After asking Jo why she picked Rhi’s proposal she commented that out of all the entries for the project Rhi’s proposal was the right balance of gathering input and quality control of the products, whilst giving the participants the creative freedom to enable them to put their own mark on the project.

Part of the proposal that Rhi submitted to Oriel was to create a blog to follow the journey of her and the participants involved. The blog which you can find on tumblr as The Designer Maker Project, is a charming and whimsical diary of the connections and artwork that has developed though the 6 weeks. Through the entries you can see the relationships forming and the confidence gained from the process of designing and making.

The blog helps break down the events over the 6 weeks:

Week 1: Brain storming and tea, how the group looked at traditional North Wales tales and folk lore, history and tradition.

Week 2: Development of ideas and mark making.

Week 3: Introduction to screen printing and collages for the plates and talking to Sarah Jane Harper and incorporating ceramics in to the project.

Week 4: Add the screen printed transfers to the ceramics.

Week 5: The group meet SJH in her studio and see how she created the ceramics.

Week 6: The group make 20 limited addition prints for the shop out of the drawings and labels.

As a collective the group have had a number of approaches in the construction and design of the objects, with some having a complex layering system towards there design whilst other products go for a more a simplest approach. Rhi mentions that when the group where together picking the final layout for the screen prints, there wasn’t a moment within the process that any one person thought it was their work but the considered the project as a group effort.

On the 5th November a private viewing of the products were revealed. The group have designed tote bags, bowls, spoons, plates and limited prints and you can really appreciate the hard work and enjoyment that each of the items clearly shows as no two plates, spoons or bowls are alike. From the 19th November the products will be available in Oriel Wrecsam’s Siop.

By supporting projects such as Designer Maker you will be helping fund the next series of ventures for March 2016. By being able to sell the products it makes this project sustainable and helps other groups of people able to access art therapy sessions that in the long run develop their confidents. Accessibility towards the arts is an important step to in to developing futures of the lives of some of the most extraordinaire people that might not necessary have the access to or the support, but with projects provided by Advance Brighter Futures, Jo and Rhi at Oriel Wrecsam it surreally is a wonderful step in the right direction for the arts in Wrexham.

OPEN CALL –
Artist Commissions
Oriel Wrecsam’s
ART VEND Round 2

Background:
During March 2015 Oriel Wrecsam moved offsite, as plans for a new cultural hub in Wrexham unfold. As we begin this exciting new phase for the arts in Wrexham, Oriel Wrecsam will be developing projects which infiltrate and enhance daily life in the town centre.

The first of these projects is ART VEND – inspired and informed by Woolgather’s Art Vend which has run successfully in Leeds city centre since April 2013: theculturevulture.co.uk/blog/radar/woolgather-art-vend-launch/
www.woolgatherart.com

Following the success of Round One, Oriel Wrecsam is now seeking proposals from artists working in any media, to create artist multiples which will be distributed from vending machines in Wrexham town centre, for £1 each, for Round 2 of this exciting project.

We have added several more Art Vend machines to our ‘fleet’, and will be rolling out this project further into different venues throughout Wrexham.
The challenge – 50 works for £50

We will again be commissioning a number of artists to create 50 artist multiples for an inclusive fee of £50, and each work must be small enough to fit inside a plastic capsule. These parameters of cost and scale mean that innovative thinking will be required!

All participating artists will be joining Oriel Wrecsam in our mission to make contemporary art accessible to all and it is up to each individual artist to design a proposal which feels comfortable in terms of material costs and predicted making time.

To apply for one of the commissions, please send the following to oriel.learning@wrexham.gov.uk

A brief written description of what you are proposing to create for Oriel Wrecsam’s Art Vend
A brief description of why you want to take part in this project (max 200 words)
Up to 6 images of examples of previous work
Links to your website or any other online presence
The deadline for proposals is 9am on Monday 1/6/15

Please note: The artwork must be designed to fit into 85 x 85 mm circular(ish) capsules.

Oriel Wrecsam’s ART VEND

In March 2015 Oriel Wrecsam is moving offsite, as plans for a new cultural hub in Wrexham unfold. As we begin this exciting new phase for the arts in Wrexham, Oriel Wrecsam will be developing projects which infiltrate and enhance daily life in the town centre.
The first of these projects is ART VEND – inspired and informed by Woolgather’s Art Vend which has run successfully in Leeds city centre since April 2013: http://theculturevulture.co.uk/blog/radar/woolgather-art-vend-launch/
www.woolgatherart.com
Oriel Wrecsam is now seeking proposals from artists working in any media, to create artist multiples which will be distributed from vending machines in Wrexham town centre, for £1 each.
The challenge – 50 works for £50
We will be commissioning a number of artists to create 50 artist multiples for an inclusive fee of £50, and each work must be small enough to fit inside a plastic capsule.

The deadline for proposals is midnight on 15/2/15

In March 2015 Oriel Wrecsam is moving offsite, as plans for a new cultural hub in Wrexham unfold.
As we transition into this exciting new phase for the arts in Wrexham, Oriel Wrecsam in inviting applications from artists working in digital and/or lens based media to undertake a residency which will help to mark the end of an era in our current building.

The contents of the archive will initially be exhibited online and may form part of our finale celebrations in March 2015.

The residency will take place between January and February 2015, with specific dates to be agreed. The chosen artist will need to spend a minimum of 5 days on-site at Oriel Wrecsam, in addition to preparation and editing time. A work space will be available at the gallery, and may be used throughout the project.
There is a fee of £3000 for this project, which is inclusive of all materials and transport costs.
– Friedrich Nietzsche

We hurtle towards winter. The evenings draw in. Now is the perfect time to hone our creative skills, to dust off those writings lounging in the top draw, or begin a new creative adventure.

Diving into six divergent writing genres over the course of as many months, participants will examine, and write on, a broad and wide-ranging variety of themes. Writing experience isn’t necessary – just bring an open, inquisitive mind and a sense of adventure. These sessions are perfect for engaging with your creativity, either as a seasoned writer, a curious beginner, or for people working in other artforms interested in trying something new.

Creative workshops will run on the second Saturday of each month at Oriel Wrecsam, from1pm – 3pm. Cost per session: £10/£7 concessions.

For 2014:
October 11th: Slam & structure.
Slam poetry is a universal phenomenon rooted in the American spoken word tradition. We’ll create an opinion piece each and slam it out at the end of the session.

November 15th: Psychogeography and the dérive.
The Situationists of 1950s Paris drifted through the city in a playful fashion, intent on creating revolutionary ways of being and transforming our relationships with urban landscapes…

December 13th: Scaling the Dark Mountain – writing rooted in time & place.
Writing new stories for the age of endings. ‘When the cities lie at the monster’s feet, there are left the mountains.’ dark-mountain.net

“Creativity takes courage.”
“One must still have creativity in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.”
– Friedrich Nietzsche

Mae’r gaeaf yn agosau. Mae hi’n nosi’n gynt gyda’r nosweithiau. Mae hi’n amser perffaith i ail-afael yn ein doniau creadigol, i ail-atgoffa ein hunain o’n gwaith ysgrifenedig yn nror y cwpwrdd, neu’n gyfle i ddechrau antur creadigol newydd sbon.
Byddwn yn edrych ar chwe dull gwahanol o ysgrifennu dros gyfnod o fisoedd, a bydd yr unigolion sy’n cymryd rhan yn archwilio, ac yn ysgrifennu ar amrywiaeth eang o themâu. Nid oes angen profiad o ysgrifennu – dim ond meddwl agored a’r chwilfrydedd a’r dyhead am antur. Mae’r sesiynau hyn yn berffaith ar gyfer gwneud y mwyaf o’ch creadigrwydd, naill ai fel awdur profiadol, rhywun sy’n gwbl newydd i’r maes, neu i bobl sy’n gweithio mewn ffurfiau eraill o gelfyddyd ac sydd â diddordeb mewn rhoi cynnig ar rywbeth newydd.
Bydd gweithdai creadigol yn rhedeg ar yr ail ddydd Sadwrn o bob mis yn Oriel Wrecsam, o 1pm – 3pm. Cost yw £10/£7 y sesiwn.

Ar gyfer 2014:
11 Hydref: Clep a strwythur.
Mae barddoniaeth glep yn boblogaidd yn fyd-eang ac yn deillio o’r traddodiad geiriau llafar Americanaidd. Byddwn yn creu darn sy’n cyflwyno safbwynt a’i berfformio ar ddiwedd y sesiwn.

15 Tachwedd: Seicoddaearyddiaeth a’r olrheinio.
Roedd y Situationists ym Mharis yn y 1950au yn crwydro drwy’r ddinas mewn modd chwareus, yn benderfynol o greu dulliau chwyldroadol a thrawsnewid ein perthynas â thirweddau trefol …

13 Rhagfyr: Dringo’r Mynydd Tywyll – gwreiddiau ysgrifennu mewn amser a lle.
Ysgrifennu storïau newydd ar gyfer diwethafiaeth. ‘When the cities lie at the monster’s feet, there are left the mountains.’ dark-mountain.net

11/09/2014 – 04/10/2014

The third and final Oriel Wrecsam offsite exhibition in the current season is about to open at Undegun. The series of exhibitions, presented in a vast dark space previously used as a store room in the former sports store, has included Stefan Gant’s exploration of Tug of War, and Ronan Devlin’s interactive projection. The latest exhibition, which opens this week, is Simon Proffitt: Something Happened. Steffan Jones-Hughes, Arts Manager Wrexham County Borough Council, has curated the programme, which explores notions of Wrexham and the previous use of the space.

“The exhibitions have looked at ideas relating to Wrexham’s position as a border town, but also each artist has responded to the space in their own way. Simon’s exhibition looks at references to sport, music, playfulness as well as referring to the previous exhibitions in the series. He has transformed the space into a galaxy of playfulness and contemplation. There are ping pong balls, mirror balls and a zither!”

Something Happened is the latest manifestation of Simon’s long-term interests in using familiar objects to both create and attempt to control chaotic systems, and taking things out of their usual habitat and putting them where they don’t belong.

Despite using very simple starting conditions with few components, and despite operating within a predictable framework, it is fundamentally impossible to predict exactly what will happen next in each of the pieces within the work at any given time. References are made to sporting rivalries, ancient Japanese court music, planetary systems and discotheques.

The main feature of the exhibition recalls the space’s former use as a sports shop retail warehouse, re-imagining it as the ultimate party venue.

Simon Proffitt [b. 1975, Nottinghamshire] is a multi-disciplinary artist pursuing a range of seemingly unrelated threads in a range of media, some of which arise from observation and response, others of which don’t. He has been based in north Wales since 2007.

After a short career in research science / technology based R&D, during which he investigated the chemical physics of artificial diamond surfaces and worked towards developing what was to become the Blu-ray disc format, he became a self-taught graphic designer. Working more creatively and freely allowed him to more fully develop his ongoing interest in audio and visual art. Although different in application, the three areas of science, design and art are ultimately three different approaches to problem-solving, and have much in common.

Themes that often emerge in Proffitt’s work include personal identity, belonging, landscape / environment / geography, symmetry, context, play, leftovers / by-products / incidentals, absence, abandonment, repetition and attempted repetition, chaos, constraint, celebration of the mundane, redundancy, reuse / recycling / remixing, inefficiency, visual incongruence, factual inaccuracies, nomenclature and pointlessness. Other themes will likely emerge in future in response to new situations.
Sioned Huws is artistic director of Aomori Project, a long term collaboration since its beginning in 2008. Sioned is a Welsh choreographer who started making contemporary dance and performance in New York 1989, whilst studying at the Merce Cunningham Studios. Her work focuses on perception, memory, person and place within choreographic structures; systems patterning small details that allow for the unexpected within a world sensed through an awareness of physical movement.
Part of a long term collaboration that links the mountains of Sioned’s native Wales with the landscape of Aomori Japan, this performance brings together a cast of ten dancers, musicians and singers from across the globe alongside local performers forthe latest incarnation of Aomori Project; a celebration of transformational landscapes and architectural spaces. Featuring Tsugaru teodori dancer Yoshiya Ishikawa, Tsugaru Shamisen- Hasegawa Sangen-kai and minyo singer Kiyoko Goto; the dance, sound and songs of Tsugaru reflect the vigor of human resilience between man and nature.

Aomori is a prefecture of Japan in the region of Tsugaru, at the Northern most tip of Honshu Island, with short summers and long snowy winters, forest of blue, green, mountains of soft linear impressions, seas of a deep navy blue enliven feeling with colour in autums. In winter, the repetitive silent snowfall arrives, a landscape transformed, the heartbeat slows down, the body is overwhelmed by a desire to rest, to lay horizontally in this blanket of white. A desire to be resisted, to move and be moved. The sounds, song and dances of Tsugaru personify these landscapes. A contemporary performances, with a cast of ten performances, dancers live musicians and singer from Japan, Wales, UK and Europe, including guest performances from North Wales.

From vertical to horizontal; the body becomes space and space is transformed into body; in repetition, movement assumes the sensibility of an internal landscape, reflecting the soul of Aomori, the silent repetition of snowfall.
